Understanding The Procedure

How Squint Surgery Works

A squint, also medically known as strabismus, occurs when your eyes are misaligned and do not naturally point in the exact same direction. Squint surgery is a common, highly refined, and safe procedure designed to correct this misalignment and restore your vision to harmony. Guided by the clinical philosophy that simplicity is the greatest sophistication, the operation focuses on gently adjusting the tiny muscles around your eyeball that control how your eyes move.

Muscle Assessment

The eye muscles are carefully examined to determine which muscles need adjustment. Precise measurements ensure optimal alignment correction.

Muscle Adjustment

The selected muscles are gently repositioned or weakened using microsurgical techniques. This restores proper eye alignment and coordination.

Improved Alignment

The eyes work together in proper alignment, restoring binocular vision and improving depth perception and visual comfort.

Eyes that are visibly misaligned or turned inward, outward, upward, or downward.

Double vision or loss of depth perception.

Eye strain or discomfort from trying to focus with misaligned eyes.

Head tilting to compensate for eye misalignment.

Reduced visual function due to poor eye coordination.

The Procedure

How Squint Surgery Works

Anaesthetic drops are applied to numb the eye completely. You will remain awake throughout but feel no pain. A small speculum holds the eyelid open gently.

A tiny incision is made to access the eye muscles that require adjustment. This incision is designed to be self-sealing and requires no stitches.

The targeted eye muscle is carefully repositioned or weakened using precise microsurgical techniques to restore proper alignment.

The small incision is closed naturally or with dissolvable stitches. Both eyes are typically treated one week apart.

A protective shield is placed over the eye. Most patients can return home within an hour. Vision and alignment continue to improve over several weeks.

Your Treatment Options

Strabismus Surgery Options

STANDARD OPTION

Single-Eye Surgery

Corrects misalignment in one eye. This approach is used when one eye carries most of the deviation and correcting it will achieve proper alignment.

BILATERAL OPTION - OFTEN RECOMMENDED

Both-Eye Surgery

Adjusts muscles in both eyes to share the correction, providing more balanced alignment and often superior long-term outcomes. This approach distributes the surgical adjustment between both eyes for optimal results.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people with strabismus (squint) are suitable candidates for surgery. You may be a good candidate if your eyes are misaligned, you experience double vision or eye strain, or you have cosmetic concerns about eye alignment. During your consultation, Dr Musa will assess your specific condition, eye movements, vision quality, and overall health to determine if surgery is right for you.

Yes, squint surgery is a safe and well-established procedure. It is performed under general anaesthetic with specialist anaesthesia administration. Complications are rare, and when they do occur, they are typically minor and temporary (such as mild irritation or temporary double vision). Dr Musa follows rigorous surgical protocols to ensure your safety throughout the procedure and recovery.

It depends on your specific condition. In some cases, one operation may correct the misalignment completely. In other cases, particularly when both eyes require adjustment, surgery may be performed on both eyes (either during the same session or one week apart for safety). Some patients may benefit from adjusting different eye muscles, which may require a second procedure. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Most patients experience significant improvement in eye alignment and coordination after surgery. You may notice reduced or eliminated double vision, improved depth perception, relief from eye strain, and a more natural appearance. Results typically become apparent within the first few weeks and continue to improve as the eye muscles stabilize over 4-6 weeks. The goal is to achieve permanent alignment in most cases.

Some patients may experience temporary double vision in the immediate post-operative period as the eyes adjust to their new alignment. This typically resolves within a few days to a few weeks as the eye muscles adapt. In most cases, this temporary effect settles completely. If double vision persists beyond the initial recovery period, Dr Musa will discuss options with you during your follow-up appointments.
