Understanding The Procedure

How Refractive Lens Exchange Works

Through a small incision, the natural lens is removed and replaced with a custom intraocular lens (IOL) for permanent vision correction.

Lens Removal

The natural lens is gently removed using ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification). This dissolves the lens into tiny fragments that are aspirated away through a micro-incision.

IOL Implantation

A premium intraocular lens is folded and inserted through the micro-incision, where it unfolds and is positioned precisely inside the lens capsule to replace your natural lens.

Clear Vision

The IOL corrects your prescription and, with multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus lenses, can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses at all distances.

Signs You May Benefit from RLE

Refractive lens exchange may be right for you if you are experiencing any of the following:

Difficulty reading without glasses.

High levels of long-sightedness (hyperopia) not suitable for laser correction.

Age-related vision changes (presbyopia) affecting near and intermediate vision.

Corneas too thin or irregular for laser eye surgery.

Unwillingness to rely on progressive lenses or reading glasses long-term.

Early cataract formation affecting vision clarity.

If any of these apply to you, refractive lens exchange may provide a permanent solution. Book a consultation to find out if you are a suitable candidate.

Why Choose Us

Key Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange

Permanent Vision Correction

Eliminates or greatly reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses. Once the IOL is implanted, your vision correction is permanent.

Freedom from Presbyopia

Restores reading and intermediate vision lost with age. Premium multifocal or EDOF lenses provide clear vision at all distances.

Precision and Stability

IOL power remains constant for life, with no regression as with laser surgery. Your vision remains stable long-term.

Prevention of Future Cataract

As the natural lens is replaced, cataract can never form in the treated eye. This provides permanent protection from this common condition.

Predictable Outcomes

Guided by advanced biometry and laser-assisted precision, your surgical outcomes are highly predictable and tailored to your needs.

The Procedure

How Does Refractive Lens Exchange Work?

Anaesthetic drops are applied to numb the eye completely. You will remain awake throughout but feel no pain. A small speculum holds the eyelid open gently.

A tiny incision of approximately 2–3mm is made at the edge of the cornea. This self-sealing incision requires no stitches and heals naturally.

An ultrasound probe breaks your natural lens into minute fragments using phacoemulsification. These fragments are gently aspirated out through the incision.

Your chosen premium intraocular lens is folded and inserted through the micro-incision. It unfolds precisely inside the lens capsule, where it remains permanently.

A protective shield is placed over the eye. Most patients can return home within an hour. Vision begins to improve within 24–48 hours as the eye heals.

Your Treatment Options

RLE Lens Options

PREMIUM OPTION - RECOMMENDED

Multifocal / EDOF Lens

Premium multifocal or extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses provide a wide range of clear vision at near, intermediate, and distance, dramatically reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses for most daily activities.

STANDARD OPTION

Monofocal Lens

A high-quality monofocal lens provides excellent distance vision and eliminates the need for distance glasses. Most patients will still require reading glasses for close work. This is a reliable, well-established option offering clarity and excellent long-term safety.

The surgical technique is essentially the same. The key difference is that in RLE your natural lens is clear, whereas in cataract surgery it is clouded. RLE is chosen proactively for vision correction before a cataract develops.

Yes. RLE uses the same highly refined technique as cataract surgery, one of the most commonly performed and safest operations in the world. With a complication rate below 0.5%, our fellowship-trained team ensures your absolute peace of mind.

With a premium multifocal or EDOF lens, most patients achieve excellent vision at all distances and rarely need glasses. With a monofocal lens, you will typically still need reading glasses. Your consultant will recommend the best option for your lifestyle.
