Understanding The Condition

What Is Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)?

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, develops when one eye fails to build a strong connection with the brain during early childhood, so the brain comes to rely on the other eye.

How It Develops

If one eye sends a blurred or misaligned image in early childhood, the brain begins to ignore it. Over time the vision in that eye does not develop fully.

Common Causes

It is usually caused by a squint (strabismus), a difference in prescription between the eyes, or something blocking clear vision such as a droopy eyelid or childhood cataract.

Why Early Care Matters

Because vision develops in childhood, early treatment gives the best chance of strengthening the weaker eye and protecting sight for life.

Notice Any of These Signs of Lazy Eye?

Your Treatment Options

Lazy Eye Treatment Options

TO CORRECT FOCUS

Glasses or Contact Lenses

If the lazy eye is caused by a difference in prescription between the eyes, glasses or contact lenses provide a clear, focused image to the weaker eye. This is often the first step and, in some children, is enough to improve vision on its own.

TO STRENGTHEN THE WEAKER EYE

Patching (Occlusion Therapy)

A patch is worn over the stronger eye for a set number of hours each day. This encourages the brain to use and strengthen the weaker eye. The amount of patching is tailored to your child and reviewed regularly to track progress.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO PATCHING

Atropine Eye Drops

Atropine drops temporarily blur vision in the stronger eye, gently encouraging the brain to rely on the weaker eye instead. They are a useful and effective alternative when patching is difficult to manage.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is a condition that develops in childhood when vision in one eye does not develop properly. The brain begins to favour the stronger eye and increasingly ignores the weaker one, so sight in that eye remains reduced even when glasses are worn. It is the most common cause of reduced vision in children.

The three main causes are a squint (strabismus), where the eyes point in different directions; a significant difference in prescription between the two eyes; and anything that blocks clear vision in one eye during early childhood, such as a droopy eyelid or a childhood cataract. Your specialist will identify the underlying cause so it can be treated.

Lazy eye is most effectively treated in early childhood, ideally before the age of seven, while the visual system is still developing. This is why routine childhood eye checks are so important. Some improvement may still be possible in older children, so it is always worth seeking a specialist assessment.

Treatment first corrects any underlying cause, for example glasses for a refractive error or treatment of a cataract. The weaker eye is then encouraged to work harder, usually through patching the stronger eye for a set number of hours a day, or using atropine eye drops to temporarily blur the stronger eye. Your consultant will tailor the plan to your child.

This varies from child to child. Some children improve within a few weeks, while others need several months of consistent treatment. Regular follow-up appointments allow your consultant to monitor progress and adjust the treatment as needed. Consistency is key to a successful outcome.
